1. Visit Newborn Lambs at a Petting Farm
It truly feels like spring once the lambs are born! Visit a local petting farm or sheepfold to admire these adorable animals. In the Netherlands, many places organise special “lamb days”, where children can not only cuddle lambs but also take part in fun activities such as treasure hunts or crafts.
2. Enjoy the Spring Blossoms
During spring, nature bursts into colour. Head out together in search of daffodils, tulips, crocuses and snowdrops in the park or forest. A visit to Keukenhof (open from 20 March to 1 May) is highly recommended. Children can enjoy the playground, pet animals in the small farm area, and complete a fun scavenger hunt.
3. Play at a Nature Playground
A nature playground is the perfect place for children to climb, clamber, swing and explore endlessly. Playing in nature supports creativity and motor development. Find a nature playground near you and let the children run wild!
4. Get Active Outdoors Together
Exercising in the fresh air is great for everyone. Go running, cycling, playing football or roller‑skating in the park or woods. Turn it into a little competition or create a fun sports challenge. Outdoor exercise is not only healthy, but also a lovely way to spend quality time together.
5. Build a Den in the Woods or Garden
Building a den is a fantastic way to keep children active and creative. Gather branches, cloths and ropes and build a cosy hideout together. Once the den is ready, you can sit inside to read a book, listen to birds, or go looking for little creepy‑crawlies.
6. Organise a Neighbourhood or Forest Treasure Hunt
Create a simple scavenger hunt in your neighbourhood, the park or the forest. Make a list of things the children can look for, such as a red flower, a big stone, or a bird feather. Who can find everything first? It’s a fun and educational activity that helps children discover nature through play.
7. Enjoy a Picnic in the Park
After all that outdoor fun, it’s time for a break! Bring a blanket and a well‑filled picnic basket and enjoy a healthy lunch in the fresh air. Tip: let the children help prepare the snacks — think fruit skewers or filled sandwiches.
