Prepare Your Child for What to Expect
Talk to your child about where you're going, what it looks like, when you'll be travelling and the fun things you'll be doing whilst you're there. This helps your child build a picture of what to expect and feel more prepared for the holiday. You could also check the weather forecast together and explain how you'll be getting there.
Create Structure and Involve Your Child in Planning the Day
A little structure is the key to a happy and relaxed holiday. Young children, in particular, benefit from having a familiar routine. Try to have breakfast together at roughly the same time each day. After all, it's the holidays, so breakfast in your pyjamas is perfectly acceptable!
During breakfast, ask your child what they would like to do that day and involve them in making plans. This helps them know what to expect and gives them something to look forward to, whether that's visiting a water park, going on a picnic, having a barbecue or enjoying an ice cream.
It's also helpful to set clear expectations around things like screen time. Older children can be given a regular responsibility, such as tidying away toys, helping with the washing up, assisting with cooking or laying the table. A small reward can provide extra motivation if needed.
Familiarity and Family Rituals
Your child's favourite cuddly toy will probably be one of the first things packed for the trip. The familiar scent of home can be incredibly comforting in a new environment.
Bringing along favourite toys or books can also help create a sense of familiarity and security. While you're away, try to continue some of the routines your child knows from home, such as reading a bedtime story or singing a favourite song before bed.
Encourage Social Interaction
Making friends on holiday often happens naturally, but you can give it a helping hand. Visit places where other children are likely to be, such as playgrounds, swimming pools or children's clubs. These settings provide plenty of opportunities for children to play together and make new friends.
Create an Activity List
Even during the most exciting holiday, children can occasionally become bored. A simple way to prepare is to create a list of fun activities that your child can choose from when they need a little inspiration.
You could also bring items they can enjoy independently for a while, such as:
- Sand toys
- Books
- Puzzles
- Soft toys
- Travel games
- Colouring supplies
- Arts and crafts materials
Enjoy!
Holidays are all about spending quality time together and making happy memories. The calmer and more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your child is likely to feel. So make sure you take time to rest, unwind and enjoy being together as a family.
