Child Participation
The Basker Mayor is an important role in the context of Child Participation. At Basker childcare, we believe that children know very well what they want, and what they don't. That's why we give them the space to make their voice heard. For us, Child Participation means that every child feels seen and heard, with a say and freedom of choice in their daily environment. And naturally that requires a real Basker Mayor!
Basker Mayor Fiene
Our very first Basker Mayor is Fiene. Fiene is 9 years old and goes to After School Care in Utrecht. We spoke with her about her hobbies, school, After School Care and her new title as Basker Mayor, of course. Time to get to know Fiene better.
Hey Fiene, how lovely that you, as Basker Mayor, are going to keep an eye on things on behalf of the children at our childcare. We've put together some fun questions for you. We'd like to get to know you a bit better!
What are your hobbies?
"Hockey, dancing and ice skating," she says enthusiastically.
And what are you really good at?
"Hockey!" she answers without hesitation. No surprise for someone who loves sport – the enthusiasm radiates from her.
What's your favourite subject at school?
"PE, maths and crafts."
How often do you actually go to After School Care?
"Two days a week."
And what do you like most about After School Care?
"Having fun together!" says Fiene with a big smile.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
"A teacher," Fiene tells us. That she enjoys helping others is immediately reflected in everything she does and wants to do as Basker Mayor.
What do you think of the new name Basker?
"I thought BLOS was quite a nice name too," she says honestly, "but Basker is also a nice name."
Why did you want to become Basker Mayor?
"Because I really want everyone to go to After School Care happily," she says, "and also that everyone goes home happily." A wonderful motivation, if we say so ourselves!
How did it feel when you heard that you'd become Basker Mayor?
"Super happy and also unexpected!" says Fiene.
What would you wish for if you could make one wish for After School Care?
"That everyone has a friend."
You've also already fulfilled your first official role as Basker Mayor. You played a part in the Basker launch video! How did you find that?
"Really great fun but also quite exciting." And we can certainly imagine that. Because there was a big camera in front of her! Super brave of Fiene.
And lastly: suppose you were teeny-tiny small and could live in Madurodam for a day, what would you do?
"Play in the Basker house."
Thank you Fiene, for this lovely chat. Have lots of fun and success with your role as Basker Mayor!
*The Basker Mayor is an unofficial role without defined tasks. Appropriate for a child in the After School Care age group.
